Kumala Island is located in the middle of the Mahakam river. Is a recreational park that combines modern technology and traditional culture. The island covering an area of 81,727 ha has been equipped with several facilities such as a 100-meter sky tower and a cable car that connects to the area across the Mahakam river. Kumala Island also features hotels and cottages.
Before it was built into a tourist park, the island was just a forest in the middle of a river overgrown with wild plants, dense trees and wild animals. If the Mahakam river overflows, the island is often submerged.
The things that underlie the idea of making Kumala Island include, among others, the silting of the Tenggarong River estuary and must be dredged so that ships that cross the Mahakam river do not run aground. The results of the dredging were used as the main material for the accumulation of Kumala Island due to rising water levels.
The construction of Kumala Island itself was handled by a local contractor with a consultant from Jakarta. The construction began with dredging using 1.5 million cubic meters of sand.
The next step is the installation of plaster around the edges of Kumala Island. So that the area of Kumala Island was originally 76 ha, after plastering it became 81,727 ha. Then proceed with making roads and installing electricity.
Kumala Island was opened in September 2002, together with the Erau celebration party. Furthermore, cable cars, lamin mancong (longhouses: Dayak traditional houses) were built, lamin wahau, lamin beyoq, fountains, sky tower, puja houses, oxusuan statues, hotels and main gates. To enter the recreation park area, visitors are charged a one-time fee, while enjoying the rides in the recreation park. There are about ten games that can be enjoyed, such as jet clotser, bombom car, play comedy and gocart.
